Alongside our listening sessions and interviews, the HMT team is launching a project to trace the complicated history of midwifery in the United States—from Indigenous traditions to the work of the Grand midwives to the rise of all paths of modern midwifery. This project will center the roles of Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and community midwives, and examine the laws, policies, and social movements that have shaped the profession over time. This information exists, we simple hope to gather it together in one place. We aim for the final deliverables, including a comprehensive evidence table and a historical timeline to be released in Summer 2026.
We enthusiastically welcome contributions from community members (experts), scholars, and historians whose stories, insights, or expertise can enrich this work. If you have knowledge or resources to share, we’d love to hear from you! Contact us at healingmidwiferytogether@gmail.com
